A Guide to Storing and Replacing Greenhouse Covering Materials
1: Storage and long-term maintenance
Film storage: After disassembly, dry and roll in a cool place. Do not stack or contact heavy objects.
Glass storage: Place upright on a wooden rack or rubber mat to avoid water ingress or adsorption.
Anti-aging measures: Choose UV-resistant materials, regularly check the rust of connectors and replace them in time.
The above stage-by-stage and material-by-material cleaning and maintenance strategies can effectively extend the life of covering materials and maintain greenhouse transmittance and environmental stability.
2: Greenhouse covering material replacement cycle guide
01 Film materials
Conventional plastic film (PE/PVC)
Replacement cycle: The service life of ordinary PE or PVC film is about 6 months to 1 year. In actual production, due to the rapid attenuation of transmittance and drip resistance, it is recommended to replace it every year.
Special scenarios: High-light crops (such as solanaceous vegetables) need to replace aging films first to avoid transmittance below 70% affecting photosynthesis.
Functional film (EVA/PO film)
EVA film: Good durability, recommended to be replaced every 2-3 years.
PO film: Strong anti-aging performance, service life can reach 2-3 years, and needs to be replaced when the transmittance drops below 80%.
PVC calendered film
Due to easy aging and poor dust resistance, it is recommended to replace it every 1-2 years.
02 Hard materials
Glass
Single-layer/double-layer glass: Chemical properties are stable, and the transmittance is maintained above 91.5% for a long time. It can be used for 20-30 years under normal maintenance, and only regular cleaning or local repairs are required.
Ultra-white diffuse reflection tempered glass: Higher transmittance (97.5%), no frequent replacement is required, but cracks need to be checked and sealed regularly.
Sunshine board (PC board)
Strong impact resistance, service life of 10-15 years, if yellowing, increased haze or transmittance drops below 60%, it needs to be replaced46.
03 Replacement timing judgment standard
Light transmittance index
Film light transmittance drops below 70% and needs to be replaced immediately. High-light crops (such as tomatoes) need to ensure light transmittance ≥ 90%.
Glass light transmittance is stable for a long time, and surface dirt only needs to be cleaned every 2-3 years.
Physical damage
Film tear area exceeds 10%, and hard materials (such as polycarbonate sheets) have cracks or delamination, it should be replaced in time.
Film surface powdering, brittleness or significant increase in haze (affecting scattered light) requires renewal.
Functional decline
When the anti-fog film fails (serious surface condensation) and the thermal insulation film's ability to adjust the temperature difference at night decreases, it is recommended to replace it.
04 Maintenance suggestions for extending life
Regular cleaning: Rinse the film once a month, and clean the glass with a high-pressure water gun every quarter to reduce the light transmittance drop by 10%-20%.
Avoid mechanical damage: Wrap soft cloth around the sharp parts of the skeleton to prevent scratches on the film or polycarbonate sheet.
Extreme weather response: timely snow removal in winter, cover the sunshade net during high temperature periods in summer to reduce the aging speed of materials.
Comprehensive suggestions: ordinary plastic film should be replaced every 1-2 years, functional film should be replaced every 2-3 years, and hard materials (glass, sun panels) can be used for a long time but require regular maintenance.
The diffuse glass and AR-coated diffuse glass produced by Yuhua have cooperated with many large commercial greenhouses in agriculture, horticulture, nurseries and experiments. We have cooperated with large greenhouse project companies such as Havecon, Van Der Hoeven, Kubo, etc. for many years. Yuhua greenhouse glass has a light transmittance of up to 99%, and haze 5/10/20/30/50/70/75 greenhouse diffuse glass is available!
